Characters & Plot
Unbroken has its main characters that pertain (Louis Zamperini, Pete Zamperini, and Russell Allen Phillips). There was a lot of other important characters throughout the book, but the three I've listed are the ones I believe are most important. Louis Zamperini was a(n) active individual who participated in the Olympics as a runner before he was enlisted as a WW2 soldier, first of all he survived a plane crash with fate on his side, he had very small amounts of food and supplies while he endured this journey. He was beat and treated as a POW during WW2 for a very long time, hence the book name "Unbroken". Pete Zamperini was Louis Zamperini's brother which led him on his journey of becoming an olympic runner by cheering him on and providing a sustainable relationship which involved the training and individual partnership which helped Louis endure. Pete also participated in the military but he didn't get deployed, he was a state side veteran. Pete also known as Russell Allen Phillips had an alias called "superman" because he was the pilot and also survived the crash with Louis, he even gets separated from Louis in another POW. They both were still friends after the war came to an end, after enduring such a long journey of such pain.
Theme
I believe the theme of Unbroken is "Resiliency" mainly because Louis really endured stayed "Unbroken" throughout the book, as well as Phil. During the last couple of chapters "Resiliency" is shown by the wood Louis holds above his head and doesn't give up, he was completely dehydrated and was tortured because "The Bird" didn't like him individually due to the fact he was an Olympic runner. Resiliency was also shown when they tried to unravel themselves in the airplane's wires during the first couple of chapters. Overall the characters of Unbroken all showed Resiliency when they were struggling without resources (food, and water) during nearly the entire book besides the beginning when life was decent. After they experienced all of the World War II pain they were recovered well, and lived a nice healthy life; also shown Resiliency while this was happening. In Unbroken multiple references to being Resilient and not giving up especially when Louis Zamperini was a child and couldn't afford much, resorting to him stealing a lot of small items, and the way he proceeds in passing these crimes off he was enlisted in the military and that alone shows hes confident and compassionate for his country in many ways.
